Now available in Cape Town is a revolutionised Hydrotherapy called Watsu!
What is Watsu Aquatic Bodywork?
It is passive warm water bodywork done by a practitioner in chest-deep still water. It harnesses the healing power of water and combines it with joint mobilization, gentle traction of the vertebral column, acupressure massage, Shiatsu stretches, dance, movement and stillness. Some modalities take the person underwater and utilize the three-dimensional freedom and support that the world below the water’s surface offers.
To give you an idea of what to expect, in a one-to-one session, you lie weightless in a warm pool. You do absolutely nothing. The practitioner will support your head and lower back or knees and you are moved, stretched, massaged and mobilised in ways impossible on land. Aquatic bodywork has a range of physical, emotional, psychological, and energetic benefits and is recognised as an effective holistic intervention in most first world countries. It came to South Africa in the last few years, and has been rated one of the top ten holistic therapies in the country by Elle magazine. It has been used for recreation, rehabilitation, and therapy.
The lack of sight and sound allows the person to fully experience the primordial womb-like safety of the water, the multidimensionality and boundlessness of their being and the body experiences unprecedented freedom and wholeness. The session is about them and the water. The practitioner helps them use the water. Be free like water. Move like water. Yield like water. Become like water.
Sessions have been used effectively to reduce acute and chronic pain, soften connective tissue, extend the vertebral column, improve breathing and sleeping patterns, increase joint flexibility and range of movement, reduce anxiety and depression, and manage neurological impairments such as strokes, cerebral palsy, Parkinsons and MS.
